The name of a trope. One where you leave the audience hanging, waiting to hear the conclusion of the story. I think it’s a nice name. Of course, that could be bias coming from someone who runs a website by the same name. Who’s to say? So imagine my joy when I found that there’s a movie with that name. I immediately knew that would be the perfect film to start my series of reviews with. I mean, it seemed like fate, a review of Cliffhanger on Cliffhanger.com? It couldn’t be any more perfect. So here’s my review of Cliffhanger.

Cliffhanger Overview

Cliffhanger is an action film released in 1993 starring Sylvester Stallone. Though it was released in the 90s, it feels like it came straight from the 80s. The plot revolves around a guy who is the best at what he does. Through the course of the movie, he is forced to fight against a group of criminals and, over time, slowly picks them off until he must face off against their leader. Ultimately, he wins and saves the girl. That is the plot of almost every 80s action movie, and this one is no different. It follows that same basic structure. So, what makes this movie different in terms of plot?

The Plot – Intro

The Inciting Incident

In this film, our hero, Gabe Walker, played by Sylvester Stallone, is a Ranger who specializes in climbing and rescuing. The film starts with a rescue where his friend and coworker, Hal Tucker, played by Michael Rooker, is trapped on a peak with his girlfriend, Sarah, played by Michelle Joyner. Gabe reaches them and signals the helicopter piloted by Gabe’s girlfriend and coworker, Jessie Deighan, played by Janine Turner, and co-piloted by his final coworker, Ranger Frank played by Ralph Waite. The helicopter is forced to land on a nearby peak, and Gabe, Hal, and Sarah are forced to cross a wire in order to reach it. Hal is able to cross without any issue, but when Sarah is crossing, her harness comes undone, and she is forced to hold on for dear life. Gabe quickly jumps on the wire and grabs her, but ultimately, she slips and falls to her death. From here, we flash forward eight months. We learn that Gabe has taken a break from the Rangers, and he comes back to collect the rest of his belongings. He tries to persuade Jessie to leave with him, but she refuses. We also learn that Hal blames Gabe for Sarah’s death.

The Plot – The Heist

Travers crosses between planes

Meanwhile, we follow a flight by the U.S. Treasury Dpt. to transfer $100 million in uncirculated currency. One of the agents on board spots a second plane tailing them and alerts the crew to a potential hijacking. He is brutally put down alongside the other agents by the turncoat Agent Richard Travers, played by Rex Linn. Alongside another turncoat in the pilot seat, he plans to cross over to the second plane with the $100 million and have the first plane crash. Ultimately, not trusting the leader, an ex-military op named Eric Qualen, played by John Lithgow, Travers crosses over first before the money. As the second turncoat is sending the money over, he is shot and killed by the agent who first saw the second plane. That agent then engages in a firefight with the second plane. During that firefight, he damages the second plane, though he is ultimately killed by an explosive on the first plane that destroys it. Unfortunately for the thieves, the money had not made it over in time, and the three cases it is in fall to the mountains below. They don’t have time to worry about that though, as their plane is crashing. The pilot manages to land it mostly safely, and they prepare to track the cases using the tracking devices within each case.

The Plot – The Rising Action

Gabe and Jessie are Delayed by Explosives

It is after this that Hal and Gabe respond to a distress call from some lost hikers. When they arrive, it turns out to be the thieves, who needed guides to guide them through the mountains in search of the cases. The thieves take them hostage and force them to help find the cases. When they reach the first case, they make Gabe climb up to grab it. When he gets ready to come back down, the thieves attempt to kill him, reasoning they only need one person to guide them. They shoot at him, and the shots trigger an avalanche that sends the first case off the mountain, scattering its contents to the wind. Gabe uses the chaos to escape. Jessie then radios in to check on how the rescue is going. Hal manages to tip her off that something is wrong, and she heads up the mountain to a shelter. Gabe meets her at the shelter and fills her in on the situation. They restock on supplies and head out. They take a shortcut and manage to beat the thieves to the second cade. They empty it and leave a single bill behind with a taunting note for the thieves. The thieves search the area, but Gabe and Jessie manage to get away. They hide out overnight in a cave using the bills they took to make a fire. In the morning, both groups continue their search. Hal and the thieves run into two base jumpers that he knows. He warns them, and they run. The thieves manage to shoot one, but the other jumps off a cliff and parachutes to the bottom, crashing in a tree.

The Plot – A Good Samaritan

The Ranger’s Helicopter

With so much time having passed, Frank gets worried and heads out in the chopper to search for the Rangers. The thieves continue on, their numbers dwindling, but Hal leads them astray. Gabe heads for the case and directs Jessie to try to get help. At this point, Frank returns in the helicopter, but the thieves trick him into landing by pretending to be injured. When he lands and comes out to help them, Hal attempts to warn him, but the thieves shoot and kill Frank.

The Plot – The Tables Turn

Travers Attempts To Take Control

Things seeming to have gone to hell, Travers attempts to take control of the group, but Qualen re-establishes control by killing one of the other thieves. At this point, there are only three thieves left. Qualen gets into the helicopter and uses it to search for Gabe and Jessie, while the other two go for the case. On the way, Travers tells the other thief to kill Hal while he goes for the case. After a brief struggle, Hal manages to win, killing the thief and taking their shotgun. Meanwhile, Gabe reaches the final case just before Travers, and Travers chases after him. They get into a struggle on a frozen river, and Gabe comes out on top, killing Travers. At this point, Gabe and Hal reunite. They then get in contact with Qualen, who reveals that he has captured Jessie by surprise when she thought the helicopter was Frank. Holding her hostage, he demands they give him the money. Gabe and Hal agree to meet him at the peak of the mountain.

The Plot – Climax and Conclusion

The Climatic Final Battle

When they arrive, Qualen hovers in the helicopter and demands they throw him the money. Gabe tosses it up into the blades, and while Qualen is distracted, he attaches the winch to an old climbing ladder. Enraged, Qualen attempts to mow Gabe down with the blades, forcing Gabe onto the ladder for safety. As the helicopter goes forward, the winch seizes, and after pulling out part of the ladder, the helicopter slams into the mountainside and is held up by the ladder. Gabe falls down onto the wrecked chopper, and he has a struggle with Qualen. Gabe manages to escape just before the weight of the chopper rips the rest of the ladder free, sending Qualen falling to his death. Gabe climbs up the rest of the cliff face and reunites with Hal and Jessie just as the authorities arrive.

Back To The Review

And that is the plot, with a bit of details omitted for time, but still. So was it any good? Ultimately, it’s serviceable but has some flaws. Those flaws mostly come in the character development areas. There were a lot of things set up at the start that just didn’t pay off well, such as Gabe conquering his guilt over Sarah’s death. He doesn’t have any moment where he seems to get past it. These sorts of small character moments can really make a film and help you get invested into the characters. After the action started, all of the character moments are thrown aside in favor of advancing the plot. The plot itself is a typical action movie affair with lots of fun setpieces, fights, stunts, and the works. While it might not be the smartest of plots, it is a damn fun ride if you shut your brain off.

Acting

Stallone as Gabe Walker

Now, as I said, the plot doesn’t have any particularly strong character moments after the action starts; the actors can still create these beats through their performances. In this case, the acting is solid. No performances are particularly amazing, but they are all done well enough. Stallone does the usual macho action movie hero performance, which is very stoic and manly, but he does offer some moments of vulnerability as Gabe early on during a conversation with Jessie. The other performances are all fun and do a good job with the material they have. The dialogue is delivered convincingly by all of the actors and they all seem to have fun with their performances.

Craft

The Dolomite Mountains, A Location Used In The Movie

While the plot and the acting weren’t particularly amazing, it’s in the craft where the movie shines. The cinematography uses a lot of aerial shots to show off the landscape, and it looks gorgeous. The Rocky Mountains are absolutely stunning, and the film uses them to full effect, giving an extremely grandiose feel to the movie and heightening the tension when the characters are free climbing on the cliffs. However, the cinematography itself is also phenomenal, with a large variety of creative shots that keep the energy moving and give a great sense of scale. The other phenomenal part of the craft is the stunt work. There are a large number of stunts packed into this movie, and while most of them are falling and climbing cliffs, they don’t fail to disappoint with each stunt feeling dangerous and exciting. One in particular, where a stuntman crosses between two planes on a zip line, is amazing to watch.

“Special” Effects

However there is one failure in the craft and that comes down to the special effects work. While most of the practical effects are good, such as the explosions and minor gore, the miniature and digital effects are not. Miniatures are only used in one scene where the thieves plane crashes and you can tell that it’s a model. I’m not certain where the failing occurred to make it not look right, but it doesn’t look quite right and takes you out of the scene. The digital effects are used very sparingly but they, being from the 90s, have aged poorly. One shot in particular at the start of the movie during Sarah’s death looks particularly bad, completely destroying the moment. Besides those flaws there’s nothing particularly bad about the movie.

Rating

To conclude, how would I rate this? I would say that it’s a mostly average film with a very nice presentation and spectacle to go along with it. If you don’t mind a very standard 80s action movie plot and occasional bad effects I would recommend checking this movie out. If you enjoy great stunt work and gorgeous landscape shots you will have a good time watching this. With all of that said I hope you enjoyed my review of Cliffhanger, and I hope to have you back again for the next movie I review… which is a surprise.
