{"id":85,"date":"2025-04-01T15:33:40","date_gmt":"2025-04-01T15:33:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitalwriting.cornellcollege.edu\/empowhersports\/?p=85"},"modified":"2025-04-08T15:00:01","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T15:00:01","slug":"mental-coaching-a-competitive-advantage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digitalwriting.cornellcollege.edu\/empowhersports\/2025\/04\/01\/mental-coaching-a-competitive-advantage\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental Coaching A Competitive Advantage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s the bottom of the 7th inning and the game is on the line.\u00a0 You step up to the plate with the winning run on third base.\u00a0 How do you handle the pressure of this situation?\u00a0 Many athletes would have increased stress and anxiety, due to the pressure they put on themselves.\u00a0 This is where mental coaching comes into play.\u00a0 An Athlete that has worked with a mental coach will know how to take the stress and anxiety and turn it into their advantage.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> They will learn to embrace pressure and treat each at bat, or serve, or race, etc. the same.\u00a0 Mental coaches play a huge role in the success of athletes. \u00a0Today\u2019s athletes have so much pressure on them.\u00a0 With social media building them up, failure leads to a lot of negative press.\u00a0 Every athlete needs to learn how to handle all of the pressure that comes along with playing high level sports. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ethan-miller.com\/index.html\">Ethan Miller Mental Performance<\/a> offers a wide variety of mental coaching options.\u00a0 Coach Miller told me in an interview, \u201cPeople think that the mental game is just another thing to add to their plate. It is the plate. It is what holds everything together.\u201d I think it would be money well spent for colleges and even high schools to have a mental coach on staff.\u00a0 Professional sports teams, as well as many college and high school teams have mental coaches that work with their athletes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Having the ability to handle stressful situations while remaining calm is a competitive advantage.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peaksports.com\/mental-performance-coach\/\">Peak Performance Sports,<\/a> \u201cAthletes invest a lot of money, time and energy practicing, working hard, lifting weights, conditioning, changing diet, working on technique and buying the best equipment.\u00a0 All these physical training routines help improve performance.\u00a0 Working on all the physical aspects of your game are not enough to achieve peak performance. Mental coaching gives athletes the ability to overcome these challenges.&nbsp; They help to take negative thoughts and turn them into positives. Mental coaching helps build mental toughness by teaching athletes how to take on adversity and make it your friend.\u00a0 Mental coaches also help athletes learn from their losses and learn from them. When athletes develop mental toughness, they can gain motivation and high levels of performance, even during the hard times. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/positivepsychology.com\/performance-anxiety\/\">Performance Anxiety<\/a>\u00a0 the five symptoms of performance anxiety are emotional symptoms, cognitive symptoms, physical symptoms, behavioral symptoms, and interpersonal consequences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnxiety that could have been performance boosting, becomes damaging or debilitating.\u201d Mental coaches keep this from happening . <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/sports-performance-anxiety\">Sports Performance Anxiety<\/a> says that the physical signs of sports anxiety are tremors, racing heart, hyperventilation, muscle tension, and bathroom troubles.\u00a0 Some mental signs are intense fear of failure, disrupted focus, over thinking, and reduced self confidence.\u00a0 All of these things can lead to self-defeating, lashing out, and poor performance.\u00a0 One successful technique\u00a0 is setting process-oriented goals rather than focusing on results. This technique helps athletes stay involved in their journey rather than becoming consumed by the pressure of winning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b171ced9f3c3e4b6309d65e8ff15bfff\"><strong>The Mental Advantage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sports today are as much a mental game as they are a physical one. Mental coaches help the athlete to have the ability to stick to their routines, stay relaxed, focused, confident, and calm in pressure situations.\u00a0 How athletes handle these situations can be the difference between winning and losing.
