Inside the GTA 6 Timeline: Delays, Labor Allegations, and What To Expect…
By Tyler Sheridan

Rockstar Games has delayed Grand Theft Auto VI again, pushing the launch to November 19, 2026. The company says it needs more time to polish the game so players get the best experience possible. It also says missed deadlines are normal for big, open-world releases and that rushing a game can hurt quality. Despite this, the delay has sparked backlash as a major union-related controversy unfolded around the studio
In late 2025, Rockstar fired more than 30 developers. Most were based at Rockstar North in the UK, with a few in Canada. The company called the dismissals “gross misconduct” and said the workers had breached confidentiality by sharing confidential information in a Discord channel. The studio expanded on this, saying some discussions included “specific game features from upcoming and unannounced titles”. This is a serious violation of non-disclosure agreements.

Not everyone accepts Rockstar’s explanation. The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) argues the firings were unlawful union busting. The union says the channel at issue was a private space where developers discussed working conditions and collective organising, not leaked game content. Union leaders and former employees argue that firing workers for discussing labour rights is retaliation, a claim the studio denies.
The situation escalated quickly. Protests took place outside Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive offices in Edinburgh and London. The UK Prime Minister described the case as “deeply concerning” and said ministers would look into it. Meanwhile, a UK employment tribunal rejected ex-employees’ request for interim pay while their unfair dismissal case moves forward, but the tribunal agreed to hear a full case. Both sides maintain confidence: The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) argues the firings were unlawful, and Rockstar insists its actions were justified.

So what does this all mean for GTA 6? Current reporting suggests the delay was announced independently of the firings. Rockstar and Take-Two claim the studio delayed the release date because it wants more polish and a smooth launch. Still, losing many experienced developers during a crucial stage of production could impact development schedules. Reddit posts from people claiming inside knowledge say morale is low and trust has eroded, which could slow workflow.
Fans remain split. Some welcome a longer wait if it leads to a better game. Others argue Rockstar’s handling of workers may damage productivity and weaken trust in the brand. Rockstar has not announced another delay, but ongoing internal turmoil and development challenges still raise that possibility. Players, analysts, and industry observers will closely watch the studio’s next major update.
