Pseudoregalia: tips and tricks

Tips & Tricks

This is something of a follow up to the indie game essay. For those who were interested in a specific game I mentioned called Pseudoregalia. This game is very near and dear to me and so I want to keep the spirit of the game in mind. While I won’t be making a walk through, I will address some of the tech and hints players may never find out about whilst playing the game. Starting with…

The Sideflip

The Sideflip is a move any player can do at the very start of the game. It’s fairly simple: flick the joystick in any direction and jump in quick succession. Sybil will proceed to do a flip and jump higher than normal. This trick will help players reach platforms in one go rather than ledge grabbing, saving a couple seconds in a speedrun. This tech actually comes into play a little later on. Moving on to the next technique…

“The Dream Kicker”

This move allows you to to Kick the Dream Breaker (Sybil’s weapon) at any enemy for extra damage and coolness. To perform it, the player has to throw the Dream Breaker, jump towards the weapon, and kick it. From there it should auto target an enemy and deal heavy damage, reducing some of the hits needed to kill them.

Finding the keys

For something more on the hint side of things, if you find yourself struggling on where to find the large keys needed to progress the game head to the Tower Remains by the Empty Bailey. If you climb all the way to the top you’ll not only find a large key, but also gravestones giving you hints on where to find the remaining keys. This would have helped me tremendously if I’d found them sooner.

Look up

For a much simpler hint: look up more. If you find yourself unsure of where to go next, the key may be just above you.

Super sidehop

Ultra sidehop

For the final tip, we’ll be learning the Super/Ultra Sidejump. Both of these give the player insane height and even travel higher than the actual highjump. To do this Slidejump forward and flick the joystick back and jump in quick succession when you reach the ground. The timing is hard to nail down. If you hit the Super Sidejump you’ll see a blue afterimage. If you hit the Ultra Sidejump, you’ll see a gold afterimage. (However you’ll probably notice the crazy jump before that.) These moves and hints are incredibly useful and can get you places earlier than you’re supposed to. So take them and put them to good use.
