The New England Patriots are currently 1-4 and on the decline. In the last two weeks they have scored 3 points and have had 72 points scored on them. Most people believe that the offense is to blame for most of the losses. I can agree with this because only putting up 3 points in two games is low for any team. This is also the lowest point in Belichick’s career. After the brutal loss Sunday he told the press that he would be \u201cstarting over\u201d<\/a> and \u201cpersonnel changes across the roster are in play\u201d<\/a>. Therefore there are multiple changes he will be considering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benching Mac Jones?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The position Belichick is most likely assessing the most would be the Quarterback position. However, should he stick with Mac Jones or not? Why? He could stick with Mac Jones and just hope he can end the negative momentum and start building more positive momentum for the team. Things have started to slip for the third-year player after the loss to the Cowboys. Before this game the Patriots were building momentum coming off a 15-10 win against the Jets. When going against the Cowboys the next week, his game fell off. They stripped Jones for a fumble, which was returned for a touchdown. A deep interception returned all the way for a pick six. And after all the turnovers he threw another interception.<\/p>\n\n\n

This just goes to show how quick things took a turn for the worse for Mac Jones. However, he is tied with throwing the most pick sixes since the beginning of the 2021 season. So it could be that Mac isn\u2019t the right fit for the job. However, the offensive coordinator believes that he will recover out of the slump he is currently in<\/a>. Bill O\u2019Brien has a point because with an inconsistent offensive line and mediocre receivers, Jones may not be the one to blame. However, he must still own up to his poor decision making across the last two weeks because even with bad receivers you can\u2019t throw the ball to your opponent multiple times a game and expect to do well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who Could Fill the Quarterback Position?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If they decide the offensive issue is Jones, who do they expect to replace him with. My guess would be Zappe. This is because he has been filling in for Jones when Belichick has been pulling him during the past two games. Over those two games he has done mediocre and probably not enough to earn him a starting position. However, the one thing he doesn\u2019t do is turn the ball over. With the Patriots tied in leading the league for the most turnovers Belichick may consider starting him instead as an option to reduce turnovers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another possibility is Will Grier who is currently their third string quarterback. This possibility is very unlikely and both other quarterbacks would most likely get hurt before they consider putting him in. This is because Belichick said he wanted him to be able to command the offense and tell the other 10 players what they are doing. Meanwhile, he isn\u2019t there quite yet. Many fans may think about considering a trade for another quarterback meanwhile the odds of this happening are low. This is because they would then need to get them up to speed on the offense and get them at a reasonable price. Both difficult things to do. Therefore, the Patriots should either stick with Mac or try to limit their turnovers with Zappe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Injury Prone Offensive Line<\/h2>\n\n\n

As mentioned above the Patriots Offensive Line has been inconsistent due to injuries. For example, they lost Mike Onwenu for the entire season in the first game. They also lost their other veteran Riley Reiff who was put on the reserve\/injured list (also known as IR) the last week of the preseason when he suffered an injury. This has led them to enter Sunday’s game with a pass block win rate of 39.7%<\/a> which is last in the league. This means that 39.7% of the time the linemen can hold their blockers for longer than 2.5 seconds<\/a>. This is causing a lack of leadership among the line due to missing veterans. When they return, we may see more improvement in their pass block win rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of waiting for the problems to fix themselves, they could decide to pick up a free agent as there are many promising offensive linemen in free agency currently. They could possibly choose a player like Jason Peters who is currently 41 years old. Last season he played for the bears and played 892 snaps with only giving up 6 sacks.<\/a> He is a solid right tackle who could fill in for a year until they can get Mike Onwenu and Riley Reiff back. They could sign him for a small contract as well that would be reasonable because he is a free agent. This is just one possible option out of the hundreds to show that there is current action they can take to improve their offensive line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under Producing Wide Receivers<\/h2>\n\n\n

Another way to support the quarterback is open receivers. Recently they have been underperforming. For example, Kendrick Bourne had the most receptions (18<\/a>) while having the same number of snaps as Davante Parker (227<\/a>) and he also had the most number of yards (218<\/a>). However, they also haven\u2019t been getting open. Against New Orleans they averaged the lowest amount of separation from their defenders in the league at 3.1 yards<\/a>. This doesn\u2019t prove that the wide receivers are the sole problem of the team, but it does tell us that it is harder to throw it to receivers who can\u2019t get separation. Which could be a reason Jones has thrown so many interceptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking forward the Patriots could possibly look at some of the younger talent they have on the team. A promising Demario Douglas is currently in concussion protocol. If he can make a speedy recovery, he may see a larger role in the offense since Belichick is switching it up. Along with Douglas, Tyquan Thornton is on the injured reserve, but I think he will be active off the list soon. Hopefully the second year can help start creating more separation from their defenders to provide Mac Jones with an easier target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the weak spot?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As Belichick said to ESPN \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of things we need to do better offensively and everybody\u2019s a part of it — coaches, players, every position\u201d<\/a>. I agree with his statement. The offensive line is rated the worst pass block in the league. Also the wide receivers created the least average amount of separation in the league. Therefore, you can\u2019t only blame Mac Jones for the failure of the New England Patriots offense. This proves although the quarterback position is a vital position to the team, they must still be surrounded by good players to do well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
