Evil Dead is one of my favorite horror movie franchises. Despite the criticisms I may have for the original trilogy, I was enamored when I watched it for the first time. As a teenager, I enjoyed the bloodshed, how horrible the deadites were, and how awfully cool Ash Williams was. This trilogy (along with the TV show) meant pure dumb fun to me, and I never expected more from it. That was until I watched the Evil Dead remake from 2013 which is a great allegory for drug addiction.

The remake follows five characters who stay in a cabin to help one of them recover from a heroin addiction. These people are: Eric, Olivia, Natalie, Mia (the person suffering from the addiction) and her brother David. After deciding to go cold turkey, it’s not too long after Mia starts presenting strange withdrawal symptoms. After going cold turkey, it’s not too long after Mia’s withdrawal symptoms make her notice red flags around the cabin. For example, she notices the smell of something dead that was coming from the basement. But things get worse once, in typical Evil Dead fashion, one of the characters reads from the necronomicon, allowing demons to possess Mia. And it is from now on that we can see why this movie is a great allegory for drug addiction.

Mia’s demon self behaves in a way that emulates how people in withdrawal can act when they go cold turkey. The Clinical Guidelines for Withdrawal Management and Treatment of Drug Dependence in Closed Settings book explains the typical symptoms of withdrawal for heroin addicts. Symptoms of withdrawal include: tremors, muscle pain, hunger or loss of appetite, fatigue, sweating, irritability and agitation, depression, anxiety. Symptoms of heroin addiction add: vomiting, insomnia, hot and cold flushes, perspiration, watery discharge from eyes and nose, and diarrhea. During the start of her possession, she becomes anxious, trembles constantly, and even pukes on Olivia. Not too long after that, Mia becomes extremely irritable and violent, looking for ways to kill the others. This is a representation of how addiction can hurt those close to a person going through withdrawal.

It is said that family members and friends can have an increased prevalence of illness and domestic violence. This is shown in the movie whenever she tries to kill others, insults them, or turns them into demons. At the same time, the film demonstrates how having the support of loved ones can help addicts recover. Evil Dead shows this by having David never wanting to give up on his sister despite how monstrous she becomes. David’s efforts are what helps turn Mia human again, and even when sacrificing himself to save her, he trusts that she will win. In the end, it’s his sacrifice that helps Mia defeat the demon that takes her form.

The demon, which we have established represents drug addiction, and the fight against it, tries to kill Mia. It does this in one scene by throwing a car against her, which incapacitates her when it crushes her left arm. To save herself, she rips off her arm, in what is symbolic to her fighting her heroin addiction. After doing this, she finally gets the strength to kill this demon for good. At the end, the sun shines on her, showing that her fight against addiction, and withdrawal was harsh but worth it. Here we can truly see how this movie is a great allegory for drug addiction.
