The 2021-2022 Cornell Rams men’s basketball team had one of the most memorable seasons in Cornell history. They exceeded expectations by winning the Midwest Conference tournament and reaching the NCAA Division 3 men’s basketball tournament. The 2021-2022 Cornell Rams men’s basketball team was led by a 3-headed monster of senior Jordan Magnani, Marcus Quirk, and fifth-year Cooper Kabela. The 3-headed monsters combined for an average of 46.4 points per game. Cooper Kabela led the team in scoring the year with an average of 17 points per game. The 6\u20195 forward from West Branch, Iowa was the superstar for the Rams that year.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One standout player from the already amazing 2021-22 men\u2019s basketball team was Cooper Kabela. In an 82-68 loss against Grinnell, Cooper Kabela set a new Cornell men\u2019s basketball all-time career scoring record<\/a> with 1,564. Griffin LaDew held the record, scoring 1,561 points from 2005-09. In the same game, Kabela scored a season-high 31 points. Coming within 2 points of his single-game career high of 34 points. Kabela set the scoring record in his 109th game, which is incidentally also the record for most games played. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The left-handed hooper boomed into the greatest score in Cornell men\u2019s basketball history after averaging only 3.8 points as a freshman. Kabela’s scoring average skyrocketed in his sophomore year. Increasing his averages from 3.8 to 17.7 points. As a junior Kabela increased his scoring average to 18.3, in his senior year, he averaged 17.9 points per game. The same season before breaking the all-time scoring record, Kabela broke the all-time record for most field goals made<\/a>. He set the record with his 538th career field goal in an 85-77 loss to Lawrence University, a record previously held for 41 years by Chad Wisco(1975-79). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2021-2022 Cornell Rams men’s basketball team also had another superstar player in Marcus Quirk. Marcus was a co-star on the 2021-2022 basketball team with 13.3 points per game on great shooting percentages. Marcus was also great at balancing the student-athlete lifestyle. He earned the Midwest Conference Elite 20 Award <\/a>for the 2021-22 men’s basketball season. MWC Elite 20 is awarded to the athlete with the highest GPA among students participating in their sport\u2019s tournament. That year, Marcus had a perfect 4.0 GPA and double majored in mathematics and computer science. Marcus was only the ninth Rams athlete to take home the Midwest Conference Elite 20 award since it was first introduced in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senior duo of Cooper Kabela and Jordan Magnani both made the Midwest Conference’s first team for 2021-22 men’s basketball<\/a>. The last time two Rams made a first-team all-Midwest Conference selection was nearly over 3 decades ago when Abe Tubbs <\/a>and Chad Reed made it in the 1992-93 season. The 6\u20195 forward Kabela earned his second first-team award for his career. The 6\u20191 guard Jordan Magnani earned his first all-conference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ram’s postseason run to the NCAA Division 3 tournament started four games before the season ended against Lawrence College. After falling 85-77 at home to Lawrence the day before, the Rams quickly got back on track the next day with a combined 60 points from their starting 3-head monster.<\/a> Magnani posted a team-high 25 points. The win against Lawrence put the Rams in a tie for the Midwest Conference regular season title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next three games the Rams played were against opponents they had beaten already the season. In their third to last game, the Rams defeated Monmouth College 75-69 to secure a spot in the MWC tournament. Sadly, the Rams would go on and lose to Grinnell and miss the chance to win the regular-season championship. In their last game of the season, the Rams comfortably won against Boloit 81-44 and they were heading to the postseason. The Rams had a great end to the regular season, going 17-8 and winning 12 games in the Midwest Conference. The 12 wins were the most conference wins for Cornell since the 2008-09 <\/a>team that made it to the NCAA Tournament as part of the Iowa conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2021-2022 Cornell Rams men’s basketball team started the postseason with a bang. The Ram’s first postseason game was against Grinnell in the Midwest Conference tournament. The Rams split the season series 1-1 against Grinnell and they were set to face each other again in the postseason. In their first postseason game, the Rams came in hot and put up an insane 111 points<\/a>, winning the game 111-97. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game was won due to an offensive clinic from their 3-headed monster, who combined for 72 points. The team shot above 50 percent from the 3-point line. Senior Marcus Quirk had a career night putting up his career-high 30 points. Fifth-year Cooper Kabela had a rare triple-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Jordan Magnani had a <\/strong>near double-double with 21 points and 8 rebounds. The Rams\u2019 best offensive game of the season put them one win away from the Midwest Conference Tournament championship, and one win away from an automatic NCAA berth. With Grinnell out of the way, the Rams advanced to the Midwest Conference championship to face the number one-seeded Ripon. Ripon finished the season with an 18-7 regular season record in a win and in-game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Conference championship game, the Rams played the number one-seeded Ripon in probably one of the greatest Division 3 basketball games of all time. The Rams split 1-1 in the season series against Ripon and the two had to face each for the Conference championship. In a double-overtime thriller, the Cornell Rams men’s basketball team beat Ripon 82-79 to win the conference championship and advance to the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time in nearly three decades. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The win put Cornell in its eighth NCAA tournament<\/a>. The last Rams team to make it to the NCAA tournament was the 2009  team, who advanced after winning the Iowa Conference championship. The stellar trio of the Rams came in clutch with a combined 65 points. Kabela and Quirk both had 25 points (Quirk made 5 3s!) and Magnani had 15 and six assists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After winning the Midwest Conference championship in a wild double-overtime game, the Rams were sent to play Washington University in St.Louis Missouri. Wash U was led by senior Jack Nolan who averaged 21.1 points per game during the season and had 28 points to end the Rams playoff run in the first round. In his last game at Cornell, fifth-year senior Kabela had 21 points with 17 of them coming in the second. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He finished his career with 1,647 points, ranking number 20 in all-time points scored in the Midwest Conference. With the number 8 ranked defense in the nation, Wash U\u2019s defense was too strong for the Rams. They limited the Rams to the fewest points they scored the whole season<\/a>. Wash U also took advantage of Cornell\u2019s 18 turnovers to score 25 points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rams never had a lead in this game but the game was close at 47-41 with 10 minutes left before Wash U went on a 9-0 run within 3 minutes and built their lead to a point where our Rams couldn\u2019t cut down. However, there were some bright spots. The number one defense in the Midwest conference Rams held Wash U to a 38.3 shooting percentage and the team also made four 3-point shots to break the school record for most 3s made in a season with 223. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the season did not end with the Rams going deep into the NCAA tournament, the season was still great. A memorable season that every Ram should be proud of. Aside from the scoring record that’s been alluded to. The Rams 2021-2022 Cornell men’s basketball team set a lot of school records.<\/a> The 2021-2022 Cornell Rams men’s basketball team set a school record for most points scored in a season(2,132) and set a school record for most 3s made in a season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2021-2022 Rams basketball team was the first team to make it to the NCAA tournament in nearly 3 decades(!). They won our first Midwest Conference championship since 1994. The 19 wins the Rams had in the 2021-2022 seasons were the second-most in a season <\/a>and only behind the 2008-2009 Rams which had 21 wins. The 2021-2022 Cornell Rams men’s basketball team had a great season\u2013one of the best in recent memory.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n
