But representation for queer people is still difficult to find. And I know I’m always looking for more queer movies to watch. It was created in Poland and is based on the actual operation hyacinth that took place in Poland. The movie follows Arek and his journey of realizing who he is and what he can and can’t conform to.

Operation Hyacinth was a secret operation of the Polish communist police, carried out in 1985–1987. The purpose was to create a national database of all Polish homosexuals and people who were in touch with them. By the end, 11,000 people had been registered. Officially the reason it was started was in fear of HIV/AIDS, to gain control over criminal homosexual gangs, and to fight prostitution. But the underlying reason is most likely that the Służba Bezpieczeństwam (security service), a form of secret police commonly referred to as SB, wanted to gather compromising evidence that would be used to blackmail individuals.

Operation Hyacinth, on the order of Minister of Internal Affairs Czesław Kiszczak, began on November 15, 1985. That morning, in different colleges, factories, and offices across Poland, the SB arrested people suspected of being homosexual or of having connections with homosexual groups. People arrested in this way had files created on them and were sometimes coerced into signing a statement saying they were gay. These files still exist and are generally referred to as Pink Files.

The film focuses on a small area of this event. It focuses on Arek, a man working as an SB in 1985 at the start of the operation. Arek is engaged when he decides to find the truth about a murder in the gay community in Warsaw, Poland. The movie follows him as he delves deeper and deeper into the investigation against his father’s orders.

image from The Half of It (2020)

The Half of It (2020)

The half of It is a visually wonderful movie, with cinematography showing beauty in the mundane. It follows the story of Ellie Chu, a withdrawn high school student in a small town. Ellie is approached by Paul Munsky, a jock, who wants her to write a love letter to Aster Flores for him. Ellie eventually agrees because she needs the money to pay a utility bill. And from there they continue to be two halves of the person they need to be to ask out Aster, one with the courage and one with the smarts. But we only get their story, thus the half of it.

This movie is something I keep coming back to. It’s like a really good book that you just can’t put down. I swear I’ve watched it so many times it would be worthless to try and count. There’s something classic about it that draws you in and doesn’t let go. I bet you can’t think of many, if any at all. There aren’t many. And there are even fewer that are main characters. I really wanted to have a fantastic, full-length asexual movie here but I kept searching and finding nothing that really fit with the other movies I’ve put on this list. It’s unfortunate and it really shows the lack of representation asexual people get in the media. I did however find a short film that puts asexuality front and center. As much as it shouldn’t be ground-breaking at this point, this film does something special by making asexuality the focus and talking about being asexual and being in relationships.

It follows the story of an asexual man in a relationship with an allosexual woman. We see the conversations they have regarding sex and love and what it means for him and their relationship that he’s asexual.

The short was directed by Peter Warkentin and written by Jaymee Mak. In interviews, Mak has said the film was inspired by a past relationship with a partner who didn’t realize he was on the asexual spectrum until well into their relationship. They also consulted with Justine Munich, an activist and academic who sits on the board of Asexual Outreach.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="540" src="https://digitalwriting.cornellcollege.edu/queer-voice/wp-content/uploads/8/2023/10/imrs.php_-1024x540.jpeg" alt="image is from Boy Meets Girl (2014). It follows Ricky, a trans woman in small town America, as she finds love. And it casts trans actress Michelle Hendley in her first acting role.

Trans stories about realization, coming out, and transitioning are undeniably important, they provide a mirror for trans people to see themselves and process their feelings and identity. As well as showing others what the trans experience can be like. But it’s also important to have movies like this one that have trans people just being people.

Ricky is comfortable with who she is. She has a personality beyond being trans which is sometimes something left out in trans and other LGBTQ+ films and stories. The movie does get less light-hearted as it goes on, diving into transphobia and suicidal ideation. But it doesn’t spend a whole lot of time on these subjects. In the end it’s a sweet love story focusing on a trans woman, love, and friendship.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://digitalwriting.cornellcollege.edu/queer-voice/wp-content/uploads/8/2023/10/rafiki-cropped-1024x576.jpg" alt="image is from Rafiki (2018). Because of its queer content, it’s been banned in its home country of Kenya where homosexuality is illegal. It is a trailblazer being the first Kenyan movie to feature a romance between two women and is certainly important regarding African and Kenyan LGBTQ+ representation.

Rafiki follows the story of two young girls in Kenya as they fall in love. They have to hide their relationship from their fathers, who are rivals in the election, and the world. But the moments of the film where they get to be themselves are colorful, joyful, and lively.

Not only is the story good but the directing brings it to life and the cinematography is downright beautiful. This is a vibrant movie that is full of heart. And although it would have been easy to tell this story as a tragedy, the director, Wanuri Kahui, tells it with hope. The movie’s existence itself embodies hope as the lead actresses play their debut roles as queer women, and as the creators write and produce a queer love story within an environment that actively attacks them for it.

Queer representation is incredibly important, just as representation is important for everyone.
